Minimum relay feerate

The lowest fee rate a node will accept into its mempool and pass on: a policy setting, not a consensus rule, which a node raises by itself when its mempool fills.

Protocol and network

Definition dated

also minrelaytxfee · min relay fee · mempool minimum fee

A node will not accept or relay a transaction paying less than its minimum relay feerate. The floor exists so that flooding the network with transactions costs something; it is a choice each operator makes, set with -minrelaytxfee, and nothing in the consensus rules requires it.

There are two floors. The configured one, minrelaytxfee, stays put. The effective one, mempoolminfee, rises above it when the mempool reaches its size limit and the node starts evicting its cheapest transactions, and falls back as the pool drains. getmempoolinfo reports both, in BTC per thousand virtual bytes.

The minimum rung on the Network tab is mempool.space's minimumFee: its node's effective floor at that moment, not an estimate of what will confirm.

Common misreadings3

  • People say

Transactions below 1 sat/vB are invalid

    Precisely

The floor is relay policy. Consensus sets no minimum fee, and a miner may include a transaction that paid nothing.

  • People say

Every node uses the same floor

    Precisely

Each operator sets -minrelaytxfee. Bitcoin Core's default was 1 sat/vB for years and is 0.1 sat/vB since version 29.1 of September 2025; nodes that have not upgraded keep the old one.

  • People say

The minimum is what it costs to confirm

    Precisely

It is the least a node will relay. Whether a block includes the transaction depends on what else is waiting.
